Single Storey Extension Built in Bispham!

Most single-storey rear extensions are considered permitted development (PD). As a result, it means they are viewed as a minor renovation and so will automatically be granted planning permission as long as they are built within the size guidelines. This makes a single storey extension a quick and easy way to add space and value to your house and a popular choice for many homeowners. Four Seasons Roof Systems recently built a rear single storey extension on a semi-detached house in Bispham. Our clients decided that they needed more living space to accommodate family and friends. They wanted to combine having more space with an open plan living lifestyle.
We built off the back of the house putting in the timber frame for the roof and a wall of breeze blocks, with an outer layer of bricks to match those used on the existing outer walls. This created a seamless link between the two. We incorporated two places in the roof for sky lights as well as a large area for bi folding doors leading out into the garden. We also put a layer of concrete down for the floor. You can see the step-by-step process we followed to build the extension from the photographs included.

When building an extension, it is important to minimise the impact that the ongoing work has on the homeowners. To do this the work has to be carried out in a systematic way that ensures minimum disruption. For example, once the outer walls and roof were in place, we were able to knock through the back wall and open up the whole room. However before doing this, we sealed up the hole where the new window was going to be fitted in order to ensure that the room was water and airtight and could still be used as a kitchen while the work was being done.

Once the main structure had been built the next part of the process was to do the internal work, fitting the new kitchen including plumbing and electrics. Painting and decorating the walls and ceiling were also part of this stage of the work and new flooring being laid.
